ORANGE COUNTY PIONEER COUNCIL

Fall Newsletter 2004

Hello members of the Orange County Pioneer Council. I hope all is well with you and your families. The Board would like to thank all those who attended the Annual Pioneer Dinner and Meeting in April at the Phoenix Club in Anaheim . It was a great success thanks to Chester Horton and all the other volunteers.  We are now looking forward to the Annual Picnic at the Mission San Juan Capistrano , Sunday, October 3, 2004.

It gives me great pleasure to welcome two new Board Members, Laura (Schmid) Cook and Cynthia (Cramer) Freeman. Their parents have been active members of the Board for many years and it is wonderful to have the next generation participating. If you, too, would like to serve on the Board please contact me at terrybrennan@mlls.com or call me (949-854-3286). The Board meets at noon at the Santa Ana Country Club on the first Tuesday of the month (Sept. thru May) and the meetings last 1 ½ hours.

One final note: Our good friend and member Barbara Blankman, First American Title’s picture librarian has passed away. We will all miss her.

We look forward to seeing you at the Annual Picnic.

Introducing our Newest Board Members

Membership Chairman Laura (Schmid) Cook was born and raised in Tustin not far from where her great-grandfather Leonhard Schmid settled in 1911. She and her husband Paul are raising their two sons in Irvine . She is happily retired after 10 years as a retail pharmacist. Laura stays at home and concentrates on her domestic engineer responsibilities as she eagerly awaits new OCPC memberships! We are pleased to welcome Laura to the Board and know she is doing a terrific job as Membership Chairman.

Cynthia (Cramer) Freeman is a descendant of the Leutwiler, Ridgway and Cramer roots of Orange County . True to her generation of Orange County teens, her first job was working at Knott’s Berry Farm and her second job was working at Disneyland . She raised her two children and had a busy career in Real Estate in Fullerton . She now resides with her new husband Rodger in Newport Beach . She is an International Corporate Trainer and a Master Certified Executive Coach to clients on 4 continents.    She also co-authored the children’s money book, Money Does Grow on Trees. She is a history buff and looks forward to future generations enjoying the many assets of Orange County . We are pleased to welcome Cynthia to the Board.

Oral History

The Annual Meeting in April, held at the Phoenix Club, was very successful.  We added five new books to our collection, including Esther Cramer’s La Habra Pioneers, Volume 4.  Interviews with Henry Segerstrom, Judge Robert Gardner, Forbes Snow Freeman, and Thomas and Frances Turton were also included.  As of this time, we only have one book in the works for next year.  There are many individuals who still need to be interviewed, but we are extremely short of interviewers.  You don’t need any experience to become an interviewer, just an appreciation of Orange County ’s heritage and a desire to get involved.  The Oral History Program and I would be more than happy to train you in the basic interviewing skills.  If you would like to participate in the program, please contact me at 949-552-6037.  The Oral History Program, now the Center for Oral and Public History (COPH) at Cal State Fullerton, will be happy to assist you in any way.  Please help us continue this valuable project.  The number for COPH is 714-278-3580.  Please ask for Kathy Frazee.
